What Makes Biodegradable Products Environment Friendly


Biodegradable products are materials which decompose naturally through temperature, bacteria, fungi, molds, and other biological processes, they decompose easily. They are made up of all natural plant materials, this includes corn oil, orange peels, starch, and plants. The process of manufacturing plastics begins with melting down natural materials, the melted mixture is then poured into molds of various shapes like plastic water bottles and kitchen utensils.


What makes Biodegradable plastics eco-friendly?
Conventional plastic bags hold carbon, when plastic is disposed they begin to melt, during this process carbon is released into the atmosphere, this causes pollution and forms a hole in the ozone layer. Biodegradable products do not comprise of carbon compounds and do not release methane when they are burned. They take less time to break down after they are discarded making the decomposition process faster. They are renewable as they are made up of biomass which is an organic compound. They require less energy to be manufactured as compared to non-biodegradable ones. As they easily degrade with the soil they cause less pollution and can be recycled and reused frequently. They reduce the dependency on oils such as fossil fuels as manufacturing conventional plastic bags involves the use of petroleum products.


Paper plates are a made up of virgin wood fiber which is extracted from forest wood these products are biodegradable but they damage the ecosystem. Bio compostable products do not decompose automatically, they must enter composting processes. This process will take approximately 180 days.
Disposing conventional plastic will lead to environmental pollution and the spread of disease causing pathogens. Plastic Bags will accumulate water and act as a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects promoting the spread of harmful diseases. Manufacturing plastic bags requires the use natural resources which are essential to the environment. Farm animals such as cows, sheep, and camel consume plastic bags, this is a life threatening issue for animals. When animals consume plastic it leads to an irregular blood flow in their body, the plastic blocks the animals digestive track and eventually leads to death.



Bagasse products
Bagasse products are an extract of sugar cane fiber which is left after the juice has been extracted. Bagasse plates and bowls are pressed in high heat and they are subjected to high pressure which strengthens it and increases its durability. Since it is a bi product of sugarcane they are biodegradable, these products are used in making materials such as tableware products, bowls, plates, containers and other similar utensils. They are natural fiber products which produce natural ingredients to the soil as they degrade. Bagasse products are heat tolerant, they can tolerate heat up to 200 F (93C) which is close to the boiling point of water. They are microwave friendly as they do not degrade when exposed to microwave radiation, unlike conventional plastic. 

The most bio-friendly material is poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxy valerate or PHVB, under the right conditions bacteria can degrade this material to form polyester to CO2 and water within 6 months. Most bio degradable plastics are made up of this material, as it involves less labor and minimizes the usage of fossil fuels.
